WOW! 19 years have come and gone since that heartbreaking day, and I still get sick to my stomach thinking about it. I was only 12 years old and in the 7th grade, in Language Arts class. My bff had a late start, and walks into class telling me she heard that a plane hit a building in New York. I told her that she must have heard wrong or that it was a total accident. No sooner do I say this that our teacher turns on the TV and we watch the 2nd plane hit the 2nd building. W.T.H. JUST HAPPENED?!
For the rest of the day there were rumblings about what happened, why it happened, who did it, why they did it, etc. But I tried to stay positive…it just HAD to be an accident…right?! I got home from school around 4pm that day and there sat my dad….??? He was NEVER home when I got home from school. We were lucky if he was leaving the city at 4pm, let alone being home by then. And that’s when I knew…that’s when it hit me…this was no accident and This. Was. Serious!
19 years ago, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles etc didn’t come home to their families. 19 years ago, the world kept spinning in circles…round and round and round it went as people waited to find out if their loved ones were alive or not. 19 years ago, time stood still. And 19 years ago, we came together as one…One Nation.
One Nation that stood together and not divided. One Nation that leaned on each other instead of pushing each other away. One Nation who didn’t care who voted or who, what their neighbors believed in, or how their friends chose to speak their minds. We came and stood STRONGLY united and showed our true colors…RED, WHITE, and BLUE!
Today, we are becoming a country divided. We are letting elections, governments, political parties, social beliefs and so much more to separate us. The saying, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall” is becoming more and more true in the year 2020. It is not only heartbreaking but maddening and sickening. How can we be bringing up CHILDREN in a world, a country, that looks like this?! My kids are learning to love their country, to take pride in being an American, and to NEVER take being an American for granted! Yet, we have people LITERALLY stealing and setting fires because they think they are owed something or deserve something without working hard for it. Who the Hell raised these animals?! I’d like to take their stuff and set fires to their homes and cars and places of business. This is NOT America. This is NOT a United Nation.
On September 11, 2020, I will wake up in the morning, say my prayers for the lives lost and their families and friends who mourn their losses. I will hug my husband, and thank God that my fire fighter has stayed safe and come home to me and our kids after every shift/call where he is called to duty. I will cuddle my babies close and tell them (in a way they will understand) about what happened on September 11, 2001. I will dress us all in our Red, White, and Blue. I will say the Pledge of Allegiance with my big kids. I will honor and have a moment of silence to remember everything and everybody that suffered that terrible day. I will hold strong in my faith and pray to God that this WONDERFUL country will one day, soon, come together as a United Nation. That we realize our differences that people fear to be the reasons we are being torn apart are actually the reasons we are the GREATEST Nation!
God Bless America…Yesterday, Today, and Every Day!
Home of the Free…Because of the Brave!
